20-Inch Winter Tires: what to look for
- Full size: the inch figure only gives the rim diameter – width and aspect ratio (e.g. 245/45 R20) must also match your vehicle.
- Approved size: the tire sizes approved for your vehicle are listed in the CoC document or the vehicle registration certificate.
- Load and speed index: both must suit your vehicle; the values are stated in every listing.
- DOT code: the last four digits give the production week and year – 2422, for example, means week 24 of 2022.
- Alpine symbol: since October 1, 2024, only tires with the mountain-and-snowflake symbol count as winter tires in Germany.
- Tread depth: the legal minimum is 1.6 mm; at least 4 mm is recommended for winter.
